Dermal fillers and biostimulators are two non-surgical options to restore facial volume and youthfulness. As we mature, we lose facial fat, collagen, elastin, and undergo bony resorption. This leads to the descent of skin and underlying tissues, resulting in an aged appearance.
Dermal fillers are typically made of hyaluronic acid and have a moisturizing effect such as smoothing and volumizing the lips or adding structure to the face.
Common areas that can be treated are; cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, chin, and scars.
Biostimulators, such as Sculptra work differently from dermal fillers to restore facial volume. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, biodegradable product derived from the alpha-hydroxy acid family (fruit acids). Sculptra stimulates the body’s natural collagen production and gradually restores facial volume, improves skin quality, and laxity. A series is recommended.
The duration of dermal filler treatment varies but typically lasts 12+ months. Biostimulators such as Sculptra have shown to be effective for a minimum of 2 years.

The treatment involves a series of small injections using a fine needle or microcannula. The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the areas treated. Most fillers contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort, but a topical numbing cream can also be applied. After the treatment, you may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites, which usually subsides within a few days. You can resume normal activities immediately, but it is advised to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun or heat exposure for 24-48 hours.
